Craig,

If the paper release is not the problem, try the following.  Remove the
ink cartridges.  Take a swab, such as a Q-Tip, dipped in alcohol, and
clean down inside the cartridge holder.  Sometime there will be quite a
bit of dried ink on the inside.  While you are at it, take something
fairly flat, like a folded paper towel or a piece of soft cloth, and
dampen it with alcohol, and clean up under the printer cartridge holder.
 You want to get the area where the printer heads meet the paper.  Also
clean the bar that the cartridges slide along, when the printer is printing.

Our Epson thinks it is smarter than we are!  It will not stop with the
cartridges in an accessible place unless IT thinks the cartridges need
to be replaced.  To get around this, I raise the lid, turn the printer
on, and wait for it to go through the start up routine.  When the
cartridges move to the center, I disconnect the electric to the printer.
