Dave ,

You might want to try going back to OS 8.5.1 if that machine still has the 604e
processor in it. I was unable to go beyond that version of the system software without
getting all kinds of weird problems with Adobe software until I moved up to a G3
upgrade about a year ago. the following is an example concerning
Photoshop that I wrote a couple of years ago.
"First let me say that don't know whether this is an S900 issue or a application
problem. I've been using Photoshop 4.0.1 since it was released, then about two years
ago I bought my S900. The S900 has 272 Megs of interleaved ram (2-128 meg dimms) one
233mhz primary processor 200mhz. gemini second processor. The
problem is that when I use any system higher than 8.5.1 some operations in Photoshop
slow down dramatically, especially opening and closing large files (20meg +) and using
the cloning tool on those files. In fact using the cloning tool will almost always
freeze the program and require me to restart the program and in
some cases the computer. OS 9.1 seems to run much better except the cloning tool
problem persists. None of the Photoshop versions through 6.0 seem to be as fast as
once you get higher than OS 8.5.1 ( I was using Adobe's demos for versions past 4.0.1)
for example; a 24 meg file opens in V4.0.1 in 12 seconds with OS
8.5.1 while the same file takes 40 seconds to open in OS 9.1. 15sec in 8.6 w/ V6.0,
40 sec in 8.6 w/V4.0
My problem is that I like many of the features in Photoshop 6 but do not want to
upgrade just to get constant freezes on my computer. What I want to know is whether or
not other people have experienced these problems and is the cure a G3 upgrade or what?
MT"

The problem was solved when I upgraded to a G3.
