Oh, boy, here we go again on this topic....
First of all, congratulations that this is working for you.

But I've never had the "rebuild the desktop" question come up when using the key
combinations.
Also, if I had a bootable CD in the Matshita drive during bootup, the computer
completely locks up before the mac smily face appears. Cursor frozen on a blank
screen.

My workaround has been using an external SCSI CD-ROM drive in the form of a CD-RW
or CD-R (I have both), which works fine whenever I need to boot from a CD. (The
original Umax CD, which is the only one that will work, is getting old with OS
8.0.) I use the same key combinations and it selects the external CD drive. The
Matshita drive, which is a 24X model, still earns its keeps as a very reliable
reader or for extracting tracks from music CDs.
