I'm not saying there's any truth to the rumor, but in answer to your questions: 1) I haven't read up on AMD's new chip, but I don't think there's much RISC/CISC distinction between what they're producing and the PPC these days. There are certainly architectural differences, but not ones that are strongly characterized by the RISC/CISC distinction. 2) Perhaps because Motorola's SPS Division has been gutted by the idiot manager they put in charge, who sacrificed their long term viability for the appearance of long term profits. Naturally, if you remove the expense of your capital and employees, while revenues from last quarter's activities are still coming in, you have the appearance of healthy profits for a quarter or two. Fortunately, the fellow has moved on to AMD now. The point of that, is that Motorola isn't very good at pushing the performance of its processors and now it's SPS division has lost many/most of its good people. The manufacturing process technology that really pushed CPU MHz in the Days of the Clones came from IBM. 3) Because Steve Jobs is *insane*. :-) 4) Because it's just a rumor and like new products and software you shouldn't believe a thing you read until it's actually released and tested.
