Gary, i was just going to send you a message but I see Jeff W already 
listed my possible fix. I can't be sure but it sounds like you are 
starting up from the power button on the front of the machine? The 
power button on my machine stopped working for booting well over a 
year ago. It really freaked me out.It works? just like yours turns 
the fan on for less then a sec and then dies. However I did find out 
that the power key on my ADB keyboard powers it on every time. The 
power button on the case will still do a restart or turn off the 
machine.USB keyboards will not power on a machine only ADB boards 
work . I hope this fixes your problem. I was going to try fixing my 
power button but decided why bother. The list of things at my place 
to fix is endless nice to have one less thing on the list ;-) Will S
