Well, I am not Jeff, but we have a c600x/280 that has the Sonnet combo Firewire/USB card installed. Yes, you do have to remove the CacheDoubler to install the combo card, or any other USB card for that matter. If you remove the CacheDoubler your machine will take a big hit in performance. Check on Sonnet's web site. You can connect 4 devices to the Sonnet ATA/100. When I checked you could buy the ATA/100 card AND a new IDE drive for the price of a similar size SCSI drive.
