You don't absolutely need one if you play through  iTunes or a similar 
application. The cable is needed for analog play- good if you have an 
older/slower computer. I have 2 CD drives (one is CD-RW) hooked up and 
I've forgotten which one has the audio hooked up to the motherboard as 
they both work perfectly to play music...
