Everything hums along under 9.1 on my J700, except the following: I recently installed the VST Ultratek/66 card (firmware 1.1.2w) and hooked up a newly purchased Philips 241240 CD-RW drive (aka Mitsumi CR-4809TE) in Bay 2. I have retained the original CD-ROM drive in Bay 1 (driven by the latest version of FWB CD-ROM Toolkit).
Problems: (1) The CD-RW drive will not burn to Maxell CD-RW 650MB disks, only to Maxell CD-R 700MB disks. (2) The Discribe software (much cheaper than Toast), which otherwise runs nicely, will not recognize my Philips drive specifically, preferring to handle it generically, even though CharisMac Support have assured me their software supports this drive, whether shown as a Philips or a Mitsumi brand. (3) FWB Support will not answer my emails about the fact that my CD-RW drive is not listed by them as a supported device for CD-ROM Toolkit. (4) I cannot use the CD-RW drive to do anything other than burn CD-R disks. It will not display data files or playback audio files. ASP sees the drive on the bus, but Finder does not see the media in the drive. So, what to do? After so many years (original ownner), I know quite a bit about my J700, but I'm a total newbie in the area of burning CDs. I want toast, but all I've got is stale bread. Jeff, Nancy, Tony, et al ... any ideas? BTW, what's with the tiresome double-branding of this drive when marketed by Philips? Purely a commercial ploy, intended to sell drives and confuse software writers attempting to add devices to their support lists? Or a technical necessity that escapes me?
