Hi Alan,

I had a defective firewire cable.

Attempt to make a long story short... About two years ago I purchased an
external drive case to hold my old laptop drive, when we put a bigger
drive in my Powerbook. The drive came with a IDE to PCMCIA cable, for
connecting to the laptop. About six months later, when that particular
drive case was being discontinued, I purchased a "clearance priced" IDE
to Firewire cable for it, for future compatibility. Late last year, we
put combo firewire/USB cards in the c600 and 9600.
I tried for weeks to get either the c600 or the 9600 to recognize the
external firewire drive. After many exchanges with tech support, they
asked me to send them the cable for testing. The cable turned out to be
defective. To my surprise, they replaced it at no charge.
