Hi Mark,

I own a PowerBook 3400c. But, it has been a long time since I used SCSI
Disk Mode.

Alan was right, you need to set the SCSI Disk Control Panel in the
PowerBook first. Second, the PowerBook will want SCSI ID number 1 on
your external SCSI bus, on the s900. If you already have something
connected to ID #1 you will have to make some adjustments. That is not
just a goofy HDI-30 SCSI cable. It is one specifically for SCSI Disk
Mode. Other SCSI cables DO NOT work, even if they have an HDI-30
connection.

WARNING! (Yes, that was a shout) Do not attempt SCSI Disk Mode if you
have replaced your original hard disk with anything larger than a 4 GB
disk. You will destroy all of the data on the PowerBook. This is due to
a bug in the ROM support for SCSI disk mode. This problem only affects
pre-G3 Powerbooks with ATA drives. For complete details see Apple's
Technical Note TN1116.

IMHO... An Ethernet Crossover cable and File Sharing make a reasonable
alternative for transferring data between a laptop and a desktop machine.
