Bill, I rarely run DD to check floppies, but it does take quite a while, due to the slow read rate for floppies. And, it depends on the data stored on the floppy. I found that items like spreadsheets and databases take longer than word processing. Custom icons also slow things down a bit.
Unless you are trying to recover damaged data from a floppy that has gone bad, you should not need to run DD on removables. I don't know if this helps or not.
