Hi Kim,

Look in the Internet Control Panel, under the Email Tab.  There is a 
place to set the sound when you have new messages.

The "not necessarily obvious" part... your machine has to be connected 
to the internet and the email program active (running in the background) 
before it works.

As an alternative to having a constant connection and the email program 
open, there are some shareware programs that will connect to the 
internet regularly and check to see if you have any new email.  I used 
to use one called MailCall.
