Those variables, I think, are based on "File Exchange" control panel (formerly "PC Exchange"), and translators that may be present like MacLinkPlus files. Further explanation is required, but for starters open up File Exchange and have a look around. As to what you're missing, I can only think of MacLinkPlus, and it's various translators that were once distributed with various word processors and even with Apple System installs. I think it's a commercial product now, but I remember when there were many MacLink files in my System, where now I see just a few. File Exchange attempts to do the same thing as MacLinkPlus, putting a face on what would otherwise be generic unrecognizable files.
