In general the OS that the machines comes with is the oldest version of the Mac OS that will run on that machine. As we have learned it is often possible to hack things so that things will run. If OS 8.6 won't install or run on your Apple G4 machine there maybe a couple of files you can exchange from the OS that does run which will let it run. Perhaps someone has already done this and knows what it will take to get it to run.
