Same exact thing happened to me a few years ago with my c600.  (Who said
lightening can't strike the same computer twice?)

Anyway, it totally fried my comm slot modem but everything else was fine
since I was using a surge protector.  Unfortunately, that protector didn't
include the phone line protection lime they do now.  I simply bought a
replacement modem and all was well.  Unless you have reason to believe
otherwise, this may be all your friend needs.
