You might check the AppleTalk settings.  AT sometimes takes over the 
serial and/or modem port.  Set it to connect via "Remote Only" or 
"Ethernet."

You did not mention if you have a Palm (or similar) connected to the 
system.  If you do, you will have to go into the Serial Port Monitor and 
make some adjustments.  If not, it will take over a port too.  I have to 
go in and manually turn on the Palm HotSync program to connect my Palm, 
then turn it off when finished.  Otherwise, I can not use one of the 
serial ports.
