I had this problem a long time ago. The fix was to open the Sound 
control panel and make some changes. The panel varies from Mac OS to 
OS. Mine is set to Built-in: external Mic
internal CD: CD
and everything works this is for OS 9.04. At some  point I installed 
some software that changed my sound settings and It took me a long 
time to figure out what was wrong. Good luck Will S
