Lithium batteries can leak, although it is fairly rare. The only ones 
that I have known to leak were very, very old. That is why they use 
lithium batts, they 'don't' leak and have a 10 year + shelf life. 
Alkaline batteries on the other hand are awful about leaking, that is 
why the alkline that some computers use (the PM 6500 comes to mind) is 
inside of a heavy duty plastic shell.
