With rechargeable batteries, being left inside of a device will 
discharge the battery below its critical point. After a battery's 
voltage goes below a certain level, it will not be able to recover and 
becomes an useless lump of matter. This is why if you don't start your 
car for a while (say 3 months), the battery will die and cannot be 
revived. This is why Apple recommends that you remove the battery for 
storage. The same applies to a cordless phone.
