This part was a bit of a debacle. Critics loved it; people who actually used the system on a daily basis predominantly hated it.
The plan was for the CD-ROM tray to be able to push the door open when a disc was ejected. Unfortunately, manufacturing kept ignoring the design specs and made the catch pin so thick that the CD often couldn't accomplish this. Even if it could push the door free from the catch, the tray would usually get stuck on a vertical bracing strip. Internally, we either removed the door or chewed that brace out with wire cutters. Then there was the opposite problem -- that the CD tray wouldn't close with the door open because the door would swing back and catch the edge of the tray's front panel. Thinking different, just not very thoroughly. Arguably the coolest thing about the door was that it featured, in embossed plastic lettering on the inside, the autographs of the entire original StormSurge 150 design team. There was one redesign to the door that we pushed through before giving up on it entirely, and that was a secondary catch pin in the hinge that would ensure it stayed fully open, completely clear of the CD-ROM tray. All of the future cases we were considering to replace the S900 were absent the door. It just wasn't worth the cost and trouble it added. -Kennedy -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
