Are any of those folks still hanging around where they can be
contacted? Every now and then I come up with a question... Today's
is why are there 32 contacts available on U42? U42 is the NVRAM
chip. It's an 8K X 8 SRAM which only uses 28 pins. There are
larger SRAMs available, and I suspect that they inserted an option to
use a larger NVRAM chip, thus creating more space for Open Firmware
patches, but who really knows. The other interesting thing is that
there actually is a 32K X 8 SRAM chip available which only has 28
pins and is mostly pin compatible with the existing chip. There are
a couple of extra address lines at pins that are NC on the old chip.
That makes me wonder if they ran address lines to the NC pins so that
a larger chip could be installed.
