Never seen this before, and the local Mac outlet is stumped as well.

I'm running 9.1 and when I open the sound control panel to adjust main
volume, the slider continually goes back to the off or no volume position.
Mute is not selected.

On t5he input tab, it says that the settings cannot be adjusted because the
device is in use by another application. Here's where it gets bizarre.

I'm getting the same thing message on three drives and three different
systems, and with ALL extensions on or just base extensions on. I need the
USB extensions on because I have a USB card installed to handle Palm
hotsyncs and will get a crash during startup if they're not read.

Any ideas here? I'm just trying to listen to a CD and all is operative
except the volume.

What on earth could be controlling the sound control panel?

All ideas are welcomed. Thanks.
