Well now...another tinkerer amongst us. Cool.

I have YDL (Yellow Dog) stable on my C600. That said, our generation
of PCI Macs cannot natively boot into Linux/BSD--there must be a
MacOS System Folder to partially boot. Then the BootX extension
allows for the choice of either booting fully into MacOS or Unix.
The best scenario would be to have a drive completely set aside for
Unix and thus create a dual boot box. If I'm in MacOS fully and then
decide to start Linux, I've been hearing from a couple of people the
same problem I've experienced, namely, the boot kernel loses the
interrupt for the drive. I suspect the generic boot kernels need to
be tweaked for the vagaries of the C series but maybe since the S900
has no IDE bus that the interrupt problem won't appear. I have no
problem booting into Linux from a cold start, however.

Please subscribe to the Max list on Low End Mac. The Unix gurus
there are quite friendly and patient.
