-- hi I tried to install different linuxes on my S900 DP 233... SuSE 7.1, YDL 2.1, Mandrake 8.0, SuSE 7.3, and finally PPCLinux 2000 Q4 and I have to state that all of this Installations were not free of Trouble. The Installation that had the least probs was PPCLinux...but thats not supported anymore..;( First you will have to deal with the "PCI Bug" of the Dec PCI to PCI Bridge.. I have read that there is a PCI Patch for the S900 that you will have to comnpile into your Kernel.. (Yet I dont know where to get that patch, would be thankfull for any hint..) than I guess it will make a difference, wether you try to install it on a single processor machine or on a SMP machine.. SuSE 7.1 AND 7.3 started into boot and installation procedure...just to fail after a few systemmessages due to the second processor.. YDL 2.1 and Mandrake as I mentioned above did not install too.. A point of high importance would be what graphic card you have in your machine.. I first had an 4MB IMS tt (from an 9600) but that was desastrous with Suse 7.1 (and I guess with any Linux will be so) then after a look at xfree.org and suse database..I decided to get an Voodoo 3 2000 this should be fully supported both sources said.. but that was nothing but lies ;( ( and every option suse support gave me lead me stuck into xmon right after booting Linux..they even tried to tell me they couldnt help me because the card (the voodoo) were not supported...but I could give them the link to their own pages, were the could read that this card should be fully supported..nevertheless I gave up ;( )... currently I switched over (still as an linux newbie ) to SuSE 7.3 on my 9600 / 350 604ev, after my experiences with the graphics on the pulsar / s900 i took the 8 mb imstt out of the 9600 and got him an Radeon 7500...that works, but still colors are garbled and theres only one screen resolution ... (I guess that is open firmware / device tree related...Linux can only give you the resolution..that MacOS had, when you left it via bootx to boot into Linux.. and the only solution to avoid this would be to boot via open Firmware..) ( I would have got an ATI rage pro that should make least trouble..but I dont know where to get it except ebay...and there such a card is definetly overprized...150 (T)euro that eqals 150 $ are much too high for used stuff..) gru Jochen P.S. hope you find the information usefull, and would be glad to hear from you about a clean install.. -- -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
