Thanks to all who have responded so far. To Jeff: the machine goes through step 4, cursor in the upper left corner of screen.
To Robyn: I did use compressed air to blow out the slots. I don't think that seating is an issue as the problem showed up out of the blue as opposed to having just inserted new RAM. Also, I put the RAM sticks in my kids computer and they showed up right away. To Philip: I did not use any solvents, just compressed air. Thanks for the other suggestions, I may try them out this afternoon. I have also had problems with the serial ports on this computer (the modem port is inoperable and I had to put in a PCI card for serial devices). I have in the past read about "cascading motherboard failure" and wondered if that might be the case here. Thanks again for all the feedback.
