It could be bad RAM, a corrupt System element or an extension 
conflict.  It could probably be some other things too, but I'd test 
for those.  For the latter two, try booting from a CDROM and see if 
your problems go away.  If they do, it does not guarantee that it is 
not bad RAM (the CDROM OS may be using less memory) but it is an 
indication.  Or if you have an OS on another volume, try booting from 
it and see if you have the same problems.
