Well, the only 3D card the Amiga ever had that was even kinda for real, was the
CybervisionPPC and it ran real hot too.  The first thing I'd do is stick a fan on
that heatsink, or make a bracket to mount a fan so it blows across the card.  Once
the card is cool and runs OK at slower bus speeds, then its time to see how far you
can go.  Good luck!

With the firewire, did you try it in the upper slots?  My j-700 seems to work OK
with firewire regardless of which port its on, and I have a Pinnacle StudioDV (for
the PC) firewire card.  Do you have the firewire support v. 2.4 installed?  That's
the latest I can go with 8.6, but it works with my JVC DVcam and my iBot so I'll
stick with it.  Did you try regressing your firewire support extensions?  Just a
thought.
