Personally, I wouldn't avoid the IBMs.   No drive manufacturer is 
producing uniformly low quality products or they wouldn't still be in 
business.  Every manufacturer has a dud line from time to time.

I operate on the theory that unless I've heard good statistical 
evidence that a line of drives has poor reliability, they all have 
about the same reliability.  That is, you can expect to have a drive 
failure at some point.  Keep good backups.
