Well I wasn't sure I was going to be posting this but ...

I ran the issue by Will first because I was a bit perplexed, again.

Anyway, I recently purchased a second OS 9.1 cd from an external source for
my s900 in hopes of preventing an installer tome problem I was constantly
getting with my other copy. Turns out, this latest cd was made for the
Powerbook G4. As Will pointed out last night, it is a non-retail cd. But
it seems to install ok except for something called 'Macintosh Computer
SW.img', which kind of sounds important, but we have no idea what it is yet.
If anybody knows, I'd like to hear.

But that's not the main subject of this post. I have installed this Pbook
G4 9.1 OS onto a newly formatted 7.8 gig IDE drive I just picked up. I
didn't want to experiment by installing over my present drives w/ data.
During the install process I used the 'For any Mac' option and made sure
none of the Powerbook stuff was going to be installed by using the Custom
Install.

The overall install seems fine but I now have a menu option that I thought
was only available w/ OS X, because I sure never had this after installing
9.1 before. I contacted Will so I wouldn't be embarrassed in front of the
whole list, in case I was supposed to have the option all along in 9.1.
Turns out I shouldn't have.

What I have is the 'Burn CD' option in the Special Menu. It is still
grayed-out, but I might be close enough to get it to work. I'm still
installing software onto that drive, but as Will pointed out, it may require
an internal Apple CDRW to function. I think it installed in the first
place because (out of a fluke decision) I ended up installing the OS using
the Powerbook CD from my Firewire CDRW. Hence it sensed (and maybe
accepted) the cdrw.

My dilemma is, I need to figure out what else is needed in order to get the
'Burn CD' option beyond its grayed-out status. (Unless of course, the
Internal Apple CDRW is the only means) But I figure its worth a try. I
hope I'm just missing some simple app or extension. Anybody know what is
the actual software name normally used w/ X when using 'Burn CD'? I haven't
installed X yet so I'm not sure what to look for. The 'Disk Burner
Extension' is loaded in the Extensions Manager. I tried putting a blank in,
hoping that would prompt it, but to no avail. Any ideas out there?

Thanks,

Dave
