Nina, We replaced the CD-ROM in our C600 and have not regretted it. We were able to find an older Apple ROM drive. There are lots of choices now, including DC-RW drives that will also boot the system.
You do want to get a drive that is 50 pin SCSI. Most drives are pretty straight forward in how you set the SCSI ID number. The only thing that might present a problem is the audio cable. But, that is pretty easy to solve. You will need a cable that has a connector on one end that is like what is currently in your machine - where the audio connects to the motherboard. And, on the other end, has a connector that matches the connector on the back of the new CD drive. I just took both cables to the computer store with me. Told them I want this connector on one end and this one on the other. (sometimes show and tell is nice) Audio cables are pretty standard, and relatively cheap. I think we paid $1.89 for the cable we needed.
