Try zapping your PRAM.   That should get the default monitor setting 
back, I think.  You may have to boot with extensions disabled as 
well, because monitor settings seem to be stored in a preferences 
file where they get accessed during boot up.    I'm not certain that 
will work, but I think it will.

When you selected the next setting up you probably chose a lower 
resolution but at a much higher refresh frequency.  Your monitor 
can't display that high of a frequency and that's why your monitor is 
unviewable.
