boot off the cd, and then trash the monitors preference on the boot
drive. in future, if you can't see the monitor image properly, it
normally goes back to the last setting on it's own after a few seconds,
or if you hit enter. you may have accidentally clicked on the "ok" box.
i'd still try other resolutions, that message came from the monitor
hardware, not the mac hardware by the way, it was just complaining about
video it new it couldn't do. this assumes the monitor will do 640x480
at whatever rate the card wants to do at that resolution. i've no idea
why it defaulted to a high resolution on you, normally it starts at the
low resolution until you change it. there may be something wrong with
one or more of the installed files. don't feel bad, i don't use my
monitor at maximum resolution either, and i've got great eyes, but it's
still one notch short of max and i've increased the font size by one
notch (2 points i think) for the desktop. i can read it the other way,
but not as easily. then again i've got great eyes for a 39 year old and
they definitely aren't as good as they used to be.

From: 'Programmers at work', Microsoft Press, Redmond, WA [c1986]:
Interviewer: "Is studying computer science the best way to prepare to be
a programmer?" Gates: "No, the best way to prepare is to write
programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In
my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I
fished out listings of their operating system."
