As long as you have a fair chunk of memory (min 64MB) you probably won't notice a speed difference and it is much more refined than 8.6. You also get the benefit of being able to use some of the iApps. As for going to X, that is more up to you, it is rock solid, but needs a ton of RAM and a G3 (what machine do you have?). I recommend at least a 300MHz/1MB. > > Also on my new tower (G3/400) that is being set up as a file > server/gateway to www is server SW worth the bother? > Please give reasons pro/con and remember this is a home LAN system for > 10 macs and PCS. > Depends on what kind of traffic you are looking for, if you run OSX on it, you wouldn't need much software. The biggest difference with OSX and OSXServer is that the Server edition allows for much more flexible file permissions without having to do a lot of tinkering. > PS. As for software, Dave <www.thursby.com> or PC-Mac LAN <www.miramar.com>. They both do the same thing. Dave installs on the Mac, PC-Mac LAN would be installed on the PC. You only need on of them. If you have fewer PCs, use PC-Mac LAN, if you have fewer Macs (why would you want that!) use Dave. > But, so do a lot of things that cost a lot or turn out to be a pain in > the ass. > The printer sharing could be a pain in the butt, depends. The file sharing software isn't too expensive or hard. Both of these things have a tendency to be easier in OSX especially the file sharing, with 10.2 Jaguar, you don't need any software to do cross platform file sharing. > Looking forward to hearing from you.
