Just pop in the Apple OS 9.1 Install CD, choose the same volume/partition as
your X install is on, and then choose a minimum installation from the drop
down menu. You can also hit the 'options' button and uncheck the 'update
Apple disk drivers' if you're not using Apple drivers for your hard
drive(s).

Putting OS 9 right alongside OS X won't mess up the OS X folders/files at
all. With a minimum 9 install you'll really only have 2 folders...
"Applications (Mac OS 9)", and the "System Folder". You can toss all those
silly alias's that are on the desktop after the install. You can also go
into the the Applications Folder or Internet Applications Folder and toss
stuff you don't need. I'm not sure if a minimum install puts much there, but
check for files that aren't needed. Why not save space rather than leave
unneeded stuff lying around. If you see Netscape or Explorer etc, toss them,
your main OS 9 volume has all that stuff already.

Lastly, after the 9 install, boot into OS X and via the 'Classic' pref pane,
choose your new 9 system as the Classic environment.
