I've done the same with my PowerBase. Remote desktop wouldn't let me 
observe or share the desktop unless there was a monitor hooked up OR my 
mac to vga adapter. You can use it to set the resolution if your model 
has dipswitches. The pin out solution is a good one too.
Next I have to figure out a cool use for it... thinking of mp3 player...
