As an interim solution you can leave a bootable CD-ROM disk in the tray of
the reader at startup. This will load the universal driver on the CD-ROM
into the System heap at startup. Any other CD-ROM loaded into the reader
during that session will be handled with that driver. If the disc is not
present at startup, the driver will not be loaded. To enable the use of
non-HFS discs, the following files need to be present in the "Extensions"
folder of the "System Folder" of the boot volume: "Foreign File Access" [the
others won't work without this], "Audio CD Access", and "ISO 9660 File
Access". The above are part of a standard installation of System 7.6.1, and
have not changed substantially since 1997; they are actually libraries
called by the driver, so they they cannot cause conflict nor memory bloat as
a file of type "INIT" or "appe" which are loaded at startup might.
Additionally, I highly recommend the latest version [1.4.2] of "Joliet
Volume Access" <http://www.tempel.org/joliet/>. This is a really well-done
bridge between CD-ROMs derived from FAT and HFS images.
