Hi,
I tried the second processor (Gemini) option and it has it's
limitations in that virtual memory has to be disabled and compatibility
with OS versions varies as the Daystar software enabler supplied with and
for the secondary processor was not upgraded due to the demise of the
company. So it worked with OS7x but not OS8x.
A couple of years ago the Gemini came up for sale quite regularly on
the auctions but I think less so now.
Although I have heard that OS9x supports the use of the secondary
processor without the Daystar software I have no personal experience of
it - perhaps someone else on the list has tried it.....I haven't upgraded
to OSX yet as the size of the installation seems staggering at over a gig
compared to my 90meg OS9 system folder. It would be interesting to test
drive the tiny system 7.1 with a G3/G4 processor compared to OSX.....
Reliable figures as to the performance gain are also hard to find
but my understanding was that the increase in performance in some
Photoshop tasks maxed out at 192.5% of the primary processor speed -
depending on the configuration - giving an equivalent 385mhz for a 200mhz
primary but these were stats from 1997/8 and may not hold true today.
