Thanks all for advice on the above.  Turns out whoever suggested the RealTek site was 
a great help!  While earlier versions of the same driver were included on my CD, for 
some reason it took the latest drivers (3.10) to make it work, coupled with turning 
off the Ethernet (built-in) extension did it.
