I can't recall seeing a thread about choosing an iBook vs. an upgraded SuperMac, but I could have missed it. You could do digital audio right now, requiring only more drive space. Digital video is a whole other beast though. Honestly, I'd say the iBook wins in nearly every category. It has USB, one FireWire port, at least a 20 gb drive, a reasonably fast G3 (512 cache though), twice the bus speed of a SuperMac, OS X out of the box capability, and portability as well. Plus iBooks are just plain old cool. And, it'll carry some good resale value for quite a while. It does need some more RAM if it only has the stock 128 mb's.. Your J700 needs a G3 upgrade card, perhaps some more RAM, a way bigger drive (perhaps also an ATA/IDE card), maybe a FireWire card, and a better video card too. But, and it's a big "but"... Upgrading, and mucking about inside a SuperMac, getting it tweaked and running good, is a whole lot of fun, and seems to balance one's chi somehow. Some of us like skinning a knuckle here and there, and pushing cuda buttons, troubleshooting, and all that stuff. Hard to put a price on that kind of inquisitive computer learning. iBooks aren't too good in that respect, but better in nearly any other. -Howie -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
