Just use the "Find" command under the File menu in OS X, and search your OS X partition for all the components of those unfriendly utilities you tried. Then use the "move to trash" command to get rid of them. Cache Control has pretty good instructions for installation, and it seems to work quite well. It used to require the Terminal for installation, not sure if it still does. Even if it does, a few attempts usually ends in success.
