Was the soldering iron in sight, when you took it out of the case? 
Some times you can fighten equipment into working.   A friend of mine 
used to call me whenever her car broke down.  I'd drive over, pull 
out my tool box, wave my hacksaw at it a few times and it would 
usually start right up.
