Hello everyone- I am in the process of upgrading my S900. I want to install an ATI 7000 Macedition video card. As I recall, in previous conversations, it was strongly recommended that this card should be installed in one of the top two PCI slots.
However, I also want to add USB and Firewire capabilities to my machine. I remember another discussion in which Jeff W. pointed out that the Orange Micro combo card also needs to be installed in one of the two upper slots. He recommended going with individual Firewire and USB cards which could be installed in the lower three slots. I checked out both Orange Micro and Adaptec cards. Both web sites state that their individual USB and Firewire PCI boards are compatible only with the Macintosh All-in-one G3, Power Macintosh Beige G3 rev. B or later, Power Macintosh Blue & White G3, and Power Macintosh G4 series computers. They note that there is an incompatibility between their USB 2.0 and FirewirePCI boards and all other PCI based Macintosh computers. Orange Micro states that its OrangeLink+ USB 2.0/FireWire PCI board does function in pre-G3 Power Macs but that puts me back to square one, i.e. too many cards too few upper PCI slots. Currently my TwinTurbo card occupies the third PCI slot. Has anyone tried to install the ATI 7000 card into that slot? If so what was your experience? Any thoughts on installing the Orangelink combo card in the third PCI slot? All previous conversations have focussed on the merits of the second slot vs that bottom three. Lastly, if the consensus is to go with separate USB 2 and Firewire cards, can anyone recommend cards that will function in the last 3 slots of a S900. Has anyone tried either the Orange Micro and Adaptec cards and if so what is your recommendation/experience? -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
