The news groups I read, if you top post, you'll be soundly pummeled 
by the regulars who have been posting to news groups for ten years 
plus.  Top posting most assuredly does not belong in news groups.

Jeff,
        The one in particular I'm talking of is a secure newsgroup,
specifically for Mac people who use Netscape. They actually request top
posting. In all honesty, I subscribe to a couple others, but those are a
mix: some top, and some bottom. 
I know, don't beat the horse.
