Did you do the multi-reboot shuffle?

When trying to connect older Macs together with a cross over cable
you must start the first machine up. Then start the second machine
up. Then shut down and restart the first machine (a simple restart
might work). And possibly restart the second machine as well.

The reason is that the on the older machines, the ethernet circuitry
doesn't activate if it doesn't see anything at the other end of the
ethernet cable. So the first start ups get the machines on. It may
even activate the second machine's ethernet (because the first
machine is at the other end of the cable). The reboot then let's the
machine start up its ethernet because now the other machine is on and
there's something at the other end of the ethernet for the creaky
ethernet circuitry to latch onto.

This isn't a problem for PCI powermacs. But the 6100 definitely has
this issue and if you were using the EN/SC with the C500 it probably
has that issue as well.

If you're using an ethernet hub, this problem doesn't exist, because
the hub is always there to provide a valid ocnnection to starting-up
ethernet connections.
