This sounds like you need some first aid. You can try rebuilding the desktop by holding down the option-Apple keys at startup. This often solves problems like missing files. Try zapping the pram with the option-Apple-p-r keys depressed at restart to the 3rd bong. Your system file could be damaged. Go to the system folder and from the system prefs file, trash the finder prefs, Mac OS prefs and system prefs. Then restart. There is a free download of TechTool Pro from www.micromat.com.
