Kennedy would be best to answer that question, but if it's the original
drive that UMAX used, it's either a 8, 12, or 24 speed drive. What you could
do is run Apple System Profiler (should be under your Apple Menu Items), and
see if it shows a model number. Folks here will know by the model number
what speed it is.
