How did you use the info available at this wonderful site to come up 
with that answer??!!
Early C500's had the 8x  later they switched to the 12x and in the last 
year or so they used the 24x which even boots Cd's with the C key.  The 
early machines were also the 140,160 & 180 603 cpu machines. Which is 
also a clue if you know which cpu you machine came with when new. To 
add to the madness the last 6 months or so machines were put together 
with what ever parts could be found. So some machines had different 
then expected drives etc. Also most early S900 and J700 machines came 
with Toshiba 6.7 x CD drives. ( just for the record ;-) Also many 
resellers especially at the end put machines together with all sorts of 
drives video cards,etc. So the only way to tell for sure is to use 
Apple System profiler or other software or look at the drive it's self.

Matsushita Model CD- 508 B  = 24x
                             CD- 506 C = 8x
12 x     I don't have one to check
