Nice Christmas present let's hope you can get it to work!
Well since you know about the xlr8yourmac.com site that is a very good
place to check for drives that work for others.
A few things to try.
Some people have reported that having the Apple CD driver installed
keeps some lit-on drives from burning cd's. They also said the Toast
driver works fine once you remove the Apple driver. It is easy to
disable using the extensions manager.
Are you using the ACARD firmware for the AEC 6260M ATA 66 card? It is
the same card as the Sonnet and the firmware is newer that what is
available from Sonnet. ACARD website has it. Some CDRW burners need to
be set to Master and used at the end of the IDE cable. The ATA card has
two plugs on it. Sometimes one plug works better then another with CD
drives. Also some CD drives like to be by themselves on the IDE cable.
The ACARD website has a list of CDRW drives that work with the ATA 66
card (unlike Sonnet) They seem to be mostly older drives and the list
not updated for sometime. There is a Yamaha 2100 on the list which
maybe still current model. Best of luck Will S
