That's correct, as far as I know. The revision letters weren't always
entirely meaningful. We tried to make them so, but the Taiwan-based
manufacturing group didn't always stick to the protocols that Engineering
tried to lay down. Revision A boards have a better chance of having the
jumper pins, but it's not absolute.
I have an S900 up in the attic. Just checked, and it's a Rev. C -- no
jumper pins at all at J38. Still trying to decide what I want to do with
both this machine and my sweet little J710. I'll probably sell them both
soon. I hate to see them sitting unused.
There *is* a date code embedded in the serial number, but I'll have to dig
through some old records to find the exact methodology. Like Apple, the
serial numbers should include the last digit of the year of manufacture ("7"
for 1997), followed by the week of the year ("07" would mean late February,
"49" would mean early December, etc.), and the actual serial number (usually
the last four digits). I can't remember if it's structured exactly like
this, but it was close.
