Hi Keith,

That's one of the most common SuperMac CDROM questions for sure...
The thing is that when trying to boot via a utility CD like Norton,
TechTool, DiskWarrior, etc., the CD driver on that CD doesn't support the
CDROM drive in the UMAX machines (typically a Matsushita device), and
therefore can't boot like an Apple branded machine can. If you can boot from
an external hard drive that has a compatible CD driver on it, and just
insert the Norton CD, you can then do a defrag or repair. In other words, it
isn't always necessary to boot from the Norton CD providing you have another
device to boot from instead.

The only true remedy for not being able to boot from the myriad of Repair
Utilities and System Installers CD's, is to get an actual Apple ROM'ed CDROM
drive.
